Champion longboarder and tandem surfer Mary Osborne is a classic triple threat. Most widely known for winning the longboard division of MTV’s reality show Surf Girls, the professional surfer and model is also making her mark as a television host, a television personality, and a business owner. Raised at Solimar Beach in Ventura, California, Mary picked up her first board at the age of fourteen.
“I got into surfing basically because I wanted to be better than the boys,” she says, referring to her three older brothers, all of whom surf. “I was supposed to be the ballerina.” Around the time that Mary started surfing, local surf shop owner and former professional surfer David Pu’u was pursuing a new career as a photographer. David and Mary began working together to create beautiful modeling and surf images. Meanwhile, Mary began promoting herself as a surfing competitor by attending tradeshows, contacting companies, and participating in several competitions. She quickly started gaining attention, and she became the first woman to ever grace the cover of The Surfer’s Path, a popular European surf magazine. Since then, Mary has appeared on the covers of several magazines: Surf Life for Women; Making Waves; Ventura Life & Style; Fantastics Mag; Brass; and Surfing Girl.
Mary’s big break came when MTV selected her (from applicants’ list of 4,000 other young women) to compete on its reality series, Surf Girls. By winning the longboard division, Mary did more than just prove her surfing skills. In 2003, she was nominated for a Teen Choice Award as “Best Female Athlete”. Mary was named the first “Action Girl of the Year” by Action Girl, Incorporated.
Mary has been featured on several television adventure shows. In addition, articles by AND about Mary have appeared in many, many magazines. Some of those are as follows: Sunset; Self; United Airlines; Longboard; Surfing; Surfer; Surf News; Surfer’s Path; Wahine; Surfer; Surf Life for Women; Surfing Girl; Nalu; On the Board; FHM; Entertainment Weekly; and Spin Magazine. Mary has also been as a television host for Fox Sports Net and other major cable television shows.
In June of 2005, Mary co-authored the book Sister Surfer: A Woman’s Guide to Surfing with Bliss and Courage with Kia Afcari. This inspirational how-to book, published by The Lyons Press, guides women through the process of learning how to surf, incorporating a wide range of strategies, from how to conquer fear of the ocean to how to wax a surfboard.
In 2008, Mary started her own business Solymar Tan. “I started Solymar Tan because I love being tan, yet I know first handedly the harmful effects of the sun. At age 28, I am already seeing major skin damage, and it is extremely frightening.”
When I first discovered airbrush tanning, I was very nervous (as are many first-time spray tanners). I thought, “Was it going to make me orange or streaky or obviously fake?” Much to my surprise, I fell in love with spray tanning after just my first session. But, how was I going to maintain my newfound tan? There were many obstacles to overcome: I was driving long distances to get spray tanned; there were not many salons offering airbrush services; and finding the perfect solution that worked for my exact skin type can be difficult. The horror stories were outnumbering the positive ones.
After endless months of research, I decided to start my own spray tanning business. Solymar Tan has been a lot of work and a huge success. My goal is to offer clients the most natural-looking, healthy tan available ~ In the privacy of their desired location, or at one of our locations.
We have an amazing staff! The Solymar Tan staff works very closely with each client to match their skin coloring with the perfect solution.
